Project Details

Shrewsberry provided roadway design and project management services for a roundabout at the intersection of Five Points Road and Edgewood Avenue. The area surrounding the intersection had seen a significant increase in residential development. This growth triggered the need to convert the existing four-way-stop intersection into a modern roundabout to improve safety and capacity.

Engineering design services and elements for the project included maintenance of traffic, hydraulic analysis for large culverts, public outreach and coordination. Utilities, right-ofway, stakeholder coordination and the close proximity to a wetland and cemetery were vital in determining the preferred placement for the roundabout. The increased coordination implemented by Shrewsberry allowed the team to optimize the geometry and location of the roundabout, as well as determine a more accurate project budget.

A unique feature of this project included the installation of a 181’ long, 18’ span by 6’ rise precast reinforced concrete, three-sided structure diagonally across the roundabout intersection. This structure replaces triple 36” diameter culverts across the south leg and a 24’ span bridge across the west leg of the intersection.
