Shrewsberry provided the hydrologic and hydraulic analysis and preliminary engineering services for the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District’s Double Track project. The overall Double Track project consists of construction of a second pedestrian rail track, along with other related platform and station improvements from Michigan City to Gary. Shrewsberry provided preliminary sizing calculations and design of the 26 rural drainage structures crossing the tracks and the urban storm water improvements necessary in Michigan City for the new track alignment.
Culvert analysis utilized HEC-RAS and HY-8 modeling software to calculate water levels. The preliminary design will be used for funding future phases. The drainage ways discharge into several sensitive resources within or near the project study area, including parklands, historic properties, and wetlands. The project involved coordination with the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and the Indiana Dunes State Park, which are also adjacent to the railroad in some locations.
