The Indianapolis Department of Public Works converted the existing one-way Michigan Street through IUPUIās campus to a two-way street, from West Street to White River Parkway. The work mirrored a similar project on New York Street to calm traffic and increase pedestrian safety throughout the campus. The project included a two-way, mostly off-street bicycle lane and improvements to the Michigan Street/West Street intersection.
This project also included a bus-only eastbound lane on Michigan Street from West Street to Indiana Avenue. This bus only lane enhanced bus and pedestrian connectivity between the IUPUI campus, the IUPUI Red Line Rapid Transit station at Capitol and Vermont Streets, and the growing student residential community east of West Street.
