Project Details

In partnership with Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), the City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) converted both New York & Michigan streets to two-way traffic. These two streets serve as the main east-west thoroughfares through the heart of IUPUI’s campus, as well as provide access to IU Health, Eskenazi & Riley Children’s hospitals. The conversion improved safety for both motorists and pedestrians, eased traffic congestion, facilitated additional traffic movements and increased accessibility for commuters to IUPUI and nearby hospitals.

Serving as the lead construction inspection firm on the New York Street Two-Way Conversion, the first phase of the two-phase project, Shrewsberry provided inspection services, managed a number of subcontracted inspection firms, served as a liaison to both the Indianapolis DPW and IUPUI, and succeeded in helping the project remain on schedule despite numerous unforeseen construction hurdles.

Improvements on this project included reconfiguring White River Parkway and West Street intersections, resurfacing / restriping the New York Street roadway to accommodate two-way traffic, adding raised medians and left turn lanes at major intersections, rehabilitation of sidewalks and curb ramps, separated bike facilities / improved on-street bike lanes and traffic signal modifications.
