Project Details

Shrewsberry’s Landscape Architecture and Site Civil Team is responsible for all exterior site improvements for the renovation of Indianapolis’ Gainbridge Fieldhouse. The Bicentennial Unity Plaze features carefully selected materials, innovative pavement designs, and thoughtfully integrated plaza spaces with curated edge treatments, seat walls, and furniture; the plaza embodies accessibility with ADA-compliant pedestrian walkways and public comfort zones.

The expanded and re-envisioned exterior plaza and the new entry pavilion form connections with surrounding pedestrian areas, such as the Cultural Trail, the Transit Center, and Georgia Street. The plaza is an amenity on game days and a community asset year-round. The design utilizes the sunken foundation of the demolished parking garage as the perimeter for a tiered gathering area, accommodating basketball, concerts, and events in warmer months and a skating rink in colder months. Adjacent areas of the plaza include terraced seating, opportunities for pop-up retail and dining, and improved access to the Team Store and arena offerings. The Bicentennial Unity Plaza at Gainbridge Fieldhouse is more than an event space. It’s an amenity that connects downtown Indianapolis and serves as a backdrop for incredible experiences for visitors and residents.

The Bicentennial Unity Plaza at Gainbridge won the Honor Award for Landscape Architecture at the 2024 Monumental Awards Celebration, presented by the Indy Chamber. This annual recognition celebrates the individuals and businesses contributing to excellence in the Central Indiana built environment.
