Project Details

Shrewsberry was selected by Citizens Energy Group to provide construction observation services on the Williams Creek Dam Retrofit Roller Breaker project. The dam is located near 72nd Street and Westfield Boulevard in Indianapolis.

Constructed by Bowen Engineering Corporation, the primary purpose of the project was to improve the safety of the dam by stepping down (or benching) the downstream face. The traditional “ogee” shape of the existing dam created a hydraulic jump causing water to go into a turbulent swirl, a very dangerous condition for a person who ends up in the water.
The new benched face was able to be retrofitted to the existing spillway, anchoring old concrete to new with epoxy grouted dowels. Shrewsberry ensured the reinforcing was installed correctly per design plans prior to each pour.

Ensuring responsible erosion and sediment control was being practiced by the Contractor was a high priority for Shrewsberry, as the majority of the work took place in the Williams Creek bed. This project required the flow of Williams Creek to be maintained at a certain flow volume for the duration of the project using a cofferdam and a pump around. Discharge from the pump around had to be monitored daily to ensure there was no turbidity in the water being redirected downstream.

Shrewsberry provided Citizens Energy Group with detailed documentation of each element of the work using photography and daily work reports. Despite the late start, the project still was completed ahead of schedule.
